Gay, Greek and Proud

Leif Mitchell

As an OUT member of Beta Alpha Chapter of the Psi Upsilon Fraternity, Leif states that he "probably would never have come out of the closet if it wasn't for the support he received from his fellow fraternity brothers." Leif described his experience in a chapter of the recently published Out on Fraternity Row: Personal Accounts of Gay Men in Fraternities.

Leif graduated from Miami University in May of 1996 with a BA in both Psychology and Political Science and a professional focus in Political Activism and Sexuality Education. Upon graduation, Leif moved to New York City, where he worked as the first intern for the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), the only national organization to end anti-gay bias in K-12 schools. Leif has worked as the Gay Youth Educator for AIDS Volunteers of Cincinnati, as the Administrative Office for the Stonewall Community Foundation in New York City and currently holds the position of Community Educator/Trainer and Web Coordinator for Planned Parenthood of Connecticut. Leif is a member of the core staff for the North Atlantic Training Institute for Sexual Health Educators.

Leif is a board member of the Connecticut Chapter of GLSEN and has compiled, edited and published a comprehensive resource module for educators, Tackling Gay Issues in School, which has been distributed internationally! Tackling Gay Issues has received support from the Connecticut State Department of Education, the Connecticut Women's Education and Legal Fund, Advocates for Youth, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, nationally known sexuality educators and many more. Leif will be publishing a Spanish translation of Tackling Gay Issues as well as an elementary supplement in September of 1999. Leif has given presentations and workshops to hundreds of schools, community organizations and colleges on a wide barrage of sexuality topics. In June of '99 Leif received the Sexuality Educator of the Year Award for the Promotion of Sexual Minority Youth from SIECCONN, the Connecticut Chapter of the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS).

Leif is a Co-Founder and Co-President of 1809 Lambda Alumni, a network of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transidentified alumni from Miami University. In his role as Co-President, he oversees the awarding of an annual scholarship for LGBT students, coordinates the functions of the board of directors and organizes regional social mixers to raise awareness of LGBT issues on college campuses.
